Martin Baláž

He has had his values in life clearly set for a long time - family, work, and sports. He can't say enough good things about his wife Aďka and son Mirko; he could talk for hours with reverence about his profession - teaching. Just last year, he ran his first marathon on the Šaštín – Skalica – Šaštín route, and achieved a beautiful time of 3 hours and 31 minutes right away. After that, he bought new running shoes to run even better. Everything changed on September 30, 2025.

While mowing in the early evening, he was suddenly struck by an unbearable headache. It was so severe he cried out in pain. His 12-year-old son, Mirko, first called his mother, who was away at the time. However, when she told him she would be back in five minutes, Mirko didn't hesitate and called an ambulance. Today, the family knows that it was precisely his quick thinking that saved his father's life.

Examinations revealed a ruptured aneurysm and extensive bleeding in the brain. Doctors were surprised that despite the serious finding, Martin remained conscious for two more hours, communicated, and moved his arms and legs. However, his condition then rapidly deteriorated. This was followed by a transfer to Bratislava, a difficult surgery, and long weeks of uncertainty. Further complications arose. High blood pressure, fever, infections, bacteria. Waking up was delayed. However, the family never stopped believing. His wife Aďka functioned like a robot. She taught at school, traveled to see her husband in the hospital, and returned home to their son in the evenings. Mirko was afraid for his father; both were sad. „We kept each other afloat. But it was very, very difficult,“ Aďka recalls.

Even though Martin wasn't aware of it yet, the family did everything they could. They massaged his hands, stimulated him, talked to him. And then came the first signs. A grip of the hand, tiny reactions that meant only one thing – hope.

When Martin came home after long weeks, he fully awoke when he looked out the window of his room. „My street,“ he said, and he remembers it to this day. At home, he gradually pieced together the puzzle of his story and realized he had been given a second chance at life.

And then Adeli came. He doesn't remember much from his first stay, but his April therapy session was a different story. Martin, who was once bedridden and later a wheelchair user, is now moving on his own after Adeli. „Miracles do happen,“ Martin says with a beautiful smile. He also rehabilitates intensely at home, and the therapies at Adeli are pushing him forward exceptionally. Everything is still cautious, slower, but Martin is not giving up. His goal is clear: to return as close as possible to the life he loved. To play sports again. To get back on his bike. And most importantly, to return to his students – to history, which was never just his job, but a true calling.

Thanks to his immense willpower, family love, and intensive rehabilitation at Adeli, he is making huge progress. He still needs to return to Adeli, so let's try to help him, even with a small contribution, to get back to his life and stand firmly on his own feet.
