Michael Horvath

Christ had different years and ideas about how the world works. Or rather, he didn't have anything particularly dreamed up, but „I wouldn't paint this kind of reality even in my worst nightmare. You wouldn't wish this on your worst enemy.“

Let's go back eight years. Mišo was a handsome 25-year-old and, with his friend, treated himself to his first „grown-up“ seaside holiday. They saved up for a bus tour to Greece. „It was great the whole time,“ he says quietly. But in an instant, everything turned around. It was July 1, 2017, the day of departure, the bus was ready, but Mišo decided there had to be a farewell to the sea.  He walked to the pier, just to jump in and swim a few final laps. He adored the water; his mother always said she didn't have to worry about him in the water. After all, he trained swimming, even fins, he was a whiz in the water. But... that last jump from the pier became Michael's undoing. He hit a shallow patch and... „this is the result. But I have to say, after all these years, it's actually a great condition today,“ says Michael, who is practically paralyzed.

Urgent operation and when he woke up, he was in shock. Immobilized legs and arms.  He understood that something was wrong. The fourth, fifth, and sixth vertebrae were crushed. His spinal cord was almost completely severed. As Mišo says, „From the middle of my biceps, meaning from my forearms down, I am powerless, immobile, I feel nothing there. On my arms, nor on my legs. It's a catastrophe.“ He returned to Slovakia after about a month. Everything was fresh, the young guy gradually gained the conviction that things would eventually be okay. „For a while, I really convinced myself that I would recover, that it would heal, that I would gain muscle, that I would simply get better, and that would be it. Gradually, I grew out of that. I had to. No one gave me any chances. They knew why."

Meanwhile  In the first year, one hopes for a miracle, in the second year, it's mostly confirmation of fate. A fate that one must accept, no matter how difficult it may be.  And setting up life in other dimensions. „Phew, of course I dealt with everything. Of course there were tears, men cry too, and I cried too. But you can't do it all the time, because someone has to wipe those tears for you,“ the likeable Mišo tries to use dark humor. Immediately, he becomes serious, admitting that looking for the meaning of life at twenty-five when you're suddenly a prisoner in your own body - „that broke me. As soon as I realized the reality, I plunged into a dark world. These are crazy states, suicidal thoughts overwhelm you, but you can't accomplish it. That's why I started to seriously consider Switzerland. Euthanasia. It seemed like the only meaningful solution. You know, I was practically left alone, my friends were living life to the fullest, and I ended up in bed watching  as day turns into night. Round and round, round and round...“

„The “trip" to Switzerland ultimately didn't happen, and Miško is glad about it today. He went from being completely bedridden to a wheelchair user who can sit in a four-wheeled chair for some time. And that's huge progress. He has been living at the Senium social services home in Banská Bystrica for five years now.  Given his condition and capabilities, this is the best solution. „I have my own room, photos hang on the walls, there's a TV, a fridge, and I have visitors, especially my mom. Friends? Well, they sort themselves out quickly. But the real ones stayed. Maybe four or five. I've learned to function with myself, although there are still days when I'm down, sad, helpless, quiet. It just has to pass, I have no other choice. On the other hand, it can be said that I have made progress. Slowly, millimeter by millimeter, I'm improving what can be improved about myself. I am one hundred percent dependent on the help of others, on assistance with everything, but with the help of a special hand orthosis, I can now brush my teeth myself, and even shave. They just have to prepare everything for me and set it up on the orthosis. But I'm managing,“ he smiles. Plus, he can operate a computer, where he plays games – especially fantasy and strategy games. „It's such an effective time killer, but nice.“ He can also operate a mobile phone, and can even type text messages. „These are really big things. I remember how in the beginning I couldn't do anything at all, my hands practically just got in the way. I didn't desire anything else back then but to at least partially get my hands moving. So I can turn on the TV remote with them, get a spoon to my mouth, so I can pass the lonely hours by calling. And look – today it's all a reality, I can manage it!“

A serious, life-altering injury changes everything. He regrets the full life he once had. He misses working around the house –  chopping wood, shoveling coal – activities he will never do again. And that list is long. He also misses ordinary trivialities that a healthy person doesn't even think about. Scratching himself, covering his mouth when yawning, or going to the refrigerator, taking out a bottle of beer, opening it, pouring it into a glass and drinking it, wiping the foam from his mouth... But he now takes his reality as a challenge, especially in the behavior and understanding of people. As a teenager he was quite „wild“, today  He would have done many things differently. However, he is grateful for his mother, who is always there for him, visits him, and they always have something to talk about. Michal does not dramatize the fact that he remains in the facility. Any action involving his body requires two people.,  Everything is as it should be.

Once a year, he undergoes intensive rehabilitation with his mother, which he can only afford thanks to donated two percent tax allocations. He says that at Adeli in Piešťany, they stretch his whole body wonderfully, and Michal feels literally reborn at the end. He loves everything about Adeli. The therapies, the people, the atmosphere. „Thanks to Adeli, I am where I am. 7 years ago, I came here as a bedridden person; the fact that I can move around here in a wheelchair today is a miracle.“

His disability pension is pathetic. He didn't have enough years worked, so he was assigned a monthly amount of around 300 euros. A healthy person can't live on that. Just the monthly living costs in the facility are up to 800 euros. So his mother covers the rest, and Miška feels guilty about it. He will get into Adeli thanks to the collected percentages, but the amount he receives is lower year after year. Therefore, he would be very grateful to anyone who would contribute to his dream therapies, „without the help of good people, I won't make it, I have no chance.“
